Sights around the castle

Four places make an easy extension to a visit to Sforza Castle. Two of them are on the castle’s doorstep. The other two sit closer to Milan’s cathedral, a metro ride or a walk away.

Where the sources we checked give no walking time, we say so. A map app will give you one on the day.

Directly behind the castle: Sempione Park

Sempione Park is the castle’s neighbour. Wikipedia says it was built between 1888 and 1894 to a design by Emilio Alemagna. The Arco della Pace stands on its north-west side, and the Arena Civica on the north-east. Other buildings in the park include the Torre Branca, the Palazzo dell’Arte, which houses the Triennale, and the Civic Aquarium.

A short walk: Brera

Brera is the artists’ district of the historic centre. Wikipedia says it is sometimes called the Milanese Montmartre. Palazzo Brera holds the Brera art gallery and the Academy of Fine Arts. No source we checked gives a walking time from the castle.

The Duomo and the Galleria

The cathedral and the arcade beside it lie on the far side of the centre. By metro, Line 1 takes you from Cairoli, near the castle, through Cordusio to Duomo, two stops. On foot, Via Dante leads from Largo Cairoli to Piazza Cordusio. It has been pedestrian since 1996.

The Duomo di Milano has rooftop terraces and a dress code. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the glass-roofed arcade next to the cathedral square.

Putting a day together

Start with the castle, then use the park to stretch your legs. Brera fits afterwards, and the cathedral and the Galleria make a natural finish, a metro ride or a walk down Via Dante away.

The castle’s museums are closed on Mondays, so see visiting Sforza Castle before you plan the order. For tickets, start with tickets and tours, and see getting there for the metro and tram stops.
