What Brera is

Brera is a district in Zone 1, Milan’s historic core, centred on Via Brera. English Wikipedia traces the name to a medieval word for open, treeless land, and says that around the year 900 the area lay outside the city walls and was kept clear for military reasons.

Today it is better known for art than for soldiers. The Brera Academy of Fine Arts and the Pinacoteca di Brera both sit in Palazzo Brera, the district’s main historic building, and Wikipedia says they helped make this an artists’ neighbourhood with a bohemian feel, sometimes called the Milanese Montmartre. It also lists restaurants, bars, antique and art shops and street markets. We do not name individual businesses, and cafés and galleries set their own hours.

The Pinacoteca di Brera

The Pinacoteca is the main reason to come. It is Milan’s great picture gallery, in Palazzo Brera at Via Brera 28.

English Wikipedia gives 1776 as the year the academy was formally founded and says the Reale Pinacoteca opened on 15 August 1809. The collection grew mainly under Carlo Bianconi and then Giuseppe Bossi. The same article warns that its dates need more citations, so treat the early history as approximate.

What it holds

According to Wikipedia, the highlights include:

  • Raphael’s The Marriage of the Virgin, from about 1504
  • Mantegna’s Lamentation of Christ and Madonna of the Cherubim
  • Piero della Francesca’s Holy Conversation
  • Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus, dated 1606
  • Hayez’s The Kiss, from about 1859
  • works by Bellini, Carpaccio, Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto

You will not need the whole day. Pick the rooms you care about and let the rest go. If the Italian Renaissance is not your thing, the Hayez and the Caravaggio are the quick wins.

Hours and booking

The museum’s own site, checked in October 2026, gives these hours:

  • Open Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 to 19:15, with last entrance at 18:00
  • Closed on Mondays, 1 May, 25 December and 1 January
  • Free with a reservation on the first Sunday of each month

Tickets are booked through the museum’s online webshop, and the page also lists a call centre. We could not find ticket prices on the page we checked, so we give none. See pinacotecabrera.org for fares and the latest hours.

The Orto Botanico di Brera

The botanical garden is in the same palazzo. English Wikipedia says it was founded in 1774 under Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, by converting a Jesuit garden for medicine and pharmacology students, and that it covers 5,000 square metres. It names one of the oldest Ginkgo biloba trees in Europe among its plants.

Wikipedia says it is open on weekdays without charge, but notes that its sources for the garden are unclear. We could not confirm this from an official page, so check before you go. It is small, which makes it a quiet pause rather than a destination.

The streets

Via Brera is the central street, and Wikipedia names Via Madonnina as another main one. The pleasure of the district is wandering: narrow lanes, shopfronts, small galleries and café tables. Shops and cafés set their own hours, so we cannot say what will be open when you arrive.

You do not need a plan. Walk, stop where something catches your eye, and leave the paid sights for the Pinacoteca. Wikipedia also mentions colourful street markets in the district, but gives no days or times, so ask locally if you hope to catch one.

Palazzo Brera is more than a gallery. English Wikipedia says the same building also houses an astronomical observatory and the Braidense National Library, and that the Jesuits took over the convent on the site in 1572. After the Jesuits were disbanded in 1773 the palazzo took on its academic role. Francesco Maria Richini rebuilt the convent in 1627 and 1628, and Giuseppe Piermarini extended it later. The same article says a modern art wing opened in 2024 at Palazzo Citterio.

Where it fits

Brera makes a good second half to a castle day. Do the museums at Sforza Castle first, since they close on Mondays and the last entry is 16:30 (see visiting Sforza Castle). Then wander the streets afterwards. The Pinacoteca closes at 19:15, so go to the gallery itself earlier in the day.

If you want greenery first, Parco Sempione is on the other side of the castle. For the cathedral and shopping arcade, see the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Our nearby page lists the rest, and getting there covers transport.
